2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9: Premium Electric SUV Coming to New Brunswick
November 26 2024,
Hyundai expands its electric vehicle range with the 2026 IONIQ 9, a three-row electric SUV featuring advanced technology and versatile space configurations. The third addition to the IONIQ series introduces several technical innovations and practical features for Canadian drivers seeking a larger electric vehicle.
Space and Interior Design
The IONIQ 9's 3,130 mm wheelbase supports a spacious cabin designed for seven occupants. The first and second-row seats recline fully and include leg rests, accommodating multiple seating positions. This flexibility proves useful during charging stops or when passengers need rest during long drives.
The Universal Island 2.0 console slides up to 190 mm, providing storage access from both the front and rear seats. The upper tray holds 5.6 litres, and the lower sliding section holds 12.6 litres. With the third row folded, the cargo area offers 1,323 litres of space, while the front trunk provides an additional 88 litres in rear-wheel-drive models and 52 litres in all-wheel-drive versions.
Interior materials focus on sustainability, incorporating recycled PET fabric, wool fabric, and bio-based materials. The dashboard features a panoramic curved display housing two 12-inch screens, complemented by slim air vents and customizable ambient lighting.
Technical Specifications and Performance
The IONIQ 9 uses a 110.3 kWh battery, delivering a WLTP-estimated range of 620 kilometres. Using 350-kilowatt charging, the battery charges from 10 to 80 percent in 24 minutes.
Three powertrain configurations offer different performance levels:
- Long-Range RWD: 160 kW rear motor (215 hp)
- Long-Range AWD: 70 kW front motor + 160 kW rear motor (308 hp)
- Performance AWD: 160 kW front and rear motors (429 hp)
The Performance AWD model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. For practical driving scenarios, such as highway passing, it achieves 80 to 120 km/h in 3.4 seconds.
Technology and Safety Features
The IONIQ 9 includes several practical innovations:
- High-output USB-C ports in all three rows, powered directly from the main battery
- Digital side mirrors with seven-inch OLED displays
- Vehicle-to-load capability for powering external devices
- Independent rear climate control system
- UV-C sterilization system for small personal items
Safety equipment includes 10 airbags and multiple driver assistance systems:
- Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2
- Lane Keeping Assist
- Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
- Safe Exit Warning
- Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
- Intelligent Speed Limit Assist
The chassis features specialized suspension tuning with self-leveling dampers and hydro-bushings to reduce vibration. Sound-absorbing tires and structural reinforcements minimize road noise, while an Active Noise Control-Road system further reduces interior sound levels.
Exterior Design and Aerodynamics
The exterior achieves a 0.259 drag coefficient through several design elements:
- Dual-motion active air flap system
- Streamlined roofline
- 3D-shaped underbody cover
- Aerodynamically optimized wheels
- Integrated antennas within the bodywork
Available exterior colours include new options such as Celadon Gray, Ionosphere Green Pearl, Sunset Brown Pearl, and Cosmic Blue Pearl. The vehicle offers wheel sizes from 19 to 21 inches, with a specialized Calligraphy design available for the top trim.
